చంద్రునికి సహజంగా ఎటువంటి వెలుగు ఉండదు. సూర్యుని కాంతి వలన దానికి వెలుగు వస్తుంది. దానినే మనం వెన్నెల అని అంటాము. లలితమ్మ మహిమ వలన అది చాలా ఆహ్లాదకరంగా ఉంటుంది. చంద్రుడు భూమి చుట్టూ భ్రమిస్తూ ఉంటాడు. దీని వలన దానిపై సూర్యకాంతి పడే కోణం మారుతూ ఉంటుంది. అందుకే చంద్రుడు ఒక్కో రోజు ఒక్కొక్కలా కనిపిస్తాడు. ఒక రోజు పూర్తిగా గుండ్రంగా ఉంటాడు. ఆ రోజును పూర్ణిమ అంటాము. ఒక రోజు అసలు కనిపించడు. ఆ రోజును అమావాస్య అంటాము. అంతే కాదు. చంద్రునికి వృద్ధి క్షయాలు కూడా ఉంటాయి. అమావాస్య నుండి పూర్ణిమ వరకు (15 రోజులు) వృద్ధి చెందుతూ ఉంటాడు. దీనిని శుక్ల పక్షం అంటాము. పూర్ణిమ నుండి అమావాస్య వరకు (మరో 15 రోజులు) క్షయం చెందుతూ ఉంటాడు. దీనిని కృష్ణ పక్షం అంటాము. ఈ శుక్ల కృష్ణ పక్షాలలో సరిగ్గా మధ్యన ఉండేది అష్టమి అనే తిథి (రోజు). ఆ రోజు చంద్రుడు అర్ధ వృత్తాకారంలో ఉంటాడు. అమ్మ నుదురు అలా ఉందిట. అందుకే అష్టమి చంద్ర విభ్రాజ దలిక స్థల శోభిత అని అన్నారు.
మనస్సుపై చంద్రుని ప్రభావం చాలా ఎక్కువగా ఉంటుంది. అందులోని మన మచ్చవలె మనస్సుకు కూడా కళంకం అంటి ఉంటుంది. దానిని శుభ్రం చేయడానికే మతం వచ్చింది. అందుకే 'మతిని శుభ్రం చేసేదే మతము' అన్నారు శ్రీ విద్యా ప్రకాశనంద గిరి గారు. అష్టమి చంద్రునిలా విరాజిల్లుతున్న అమ్మ నొసటన బొట్టు చంద్రుని పై మృగ నాభిని తలపించే బొట్టులా ఉందిట. అందుకే ముఖ చంద్ర కళంకాభా మృగ నాభి విశేషక అన్నారు.
The moon does not have any glow on its own. It glows due to the reflection of sunlight from its surface. It looks pleasant due to Divine mother's glory. The moon rotates around the earth. Due to this, the angle at which we view the moon changes. This is why moon is seen in various shapes. On a particular day, it looks like a full circle. This is called full moon day. On a particular day it goes completely invisible. This is called new moon day. The moon also waxes and wanes due to its rotation. It waxes from new moon day to full moon day. This is called waxing phase. It is for 15 days. It wanes between full moon day to new moon day. This is called waning phase. It is for another 15 days. The eighth day in these waxing and waning phases is called ashtami. It is the middle point in each phase. On this day, the moon looks like a semi circle. It seems Divine mother's forehead head is glowing like this semi circle moon. Hence she is called ashtami chandra vibhraaja dalika sthala shobhita.
Moon has a very strong influence on our mind. The moon looks tainted. So is the mind. We need a religion to clean the mind of these taints. That is why Sri Vidhya Prakaasaananda Giri said, "One that rids the mind of all its taints is called religion". That is the real purpose of a religion. The bindi on Divine mother's forehead that is glowing like a moon on ashtami looks like a taint that resembles navel. Hence she is called mukha chandra kalankabha mruga naabhi visheshaka.
