దక్షయజ్ఞం సమయంలో దాక్షాయణి దగ్ధమైపోయింది. సతి వియోగాన్ని భరించలేని శివుడు కొంతకాలం దేశాల వెంబడి తిరిగి ఆ తరువాత విరాగియై హిమాలయాల్లో తపస్సు చేసుకుంటున్నాడు. వజ్రాంగుడి కుమారుడు తారకాసురుడు బ్రహ్మను మెప్పించి ఇప్పటివరకు తన సృష్టిలో ఉన్న ఏ ప్రాణితోనూ మరణం లేకుండా వరం పొందాడు. వరబలంతో గర్వించి దేవతలను బాధించటం ప్రారంభించాడు. దేవతలంతా హిమాలయాలకుపోయి ఆ పరమేశ్వరిని ప్రార్థించారు. ఈ లోకంలో తన అంశపుడుతుందని, దాన్ని శివునకిచ్చి వివాహంచేస్తే, వారికి కలిగే కుమారుడు తారకుణ్ణి సంహరిస్తాడు అని చెప్పింది. అప్పుడు హిమవంతుడు ఆ పరమేశ్వరుణ్ణి ప్రార్ధించి తన యింట, తన కుమార్తెగా పుట్టమన్నాడు. అతని కోరిక మన్నించి హిమవంతుని ఇంట పుట్టి హైమవతిగా ప్రసిద్ధిచెందింది. ప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన పర్వతాలు ఏడు. అవి

- హేమకూటము
వీటిలో హిమవత్పర్వతము శ్రేష్టమైనది. అందుకే దాన్ని శైలేంద్రము అంటారు. ఆ పరమేశ్వరి హిమవంతుని గర్భానపుట్టింది కాబట్టి శైలేంద్రతనయా అనబడుతుంది.

Dakshayani immolates herself in Daksha yagna. Shiva was unable to bear the loss of Dakshayani. So went to Himalayas and goes into deep meditation. Taraka, son of Vajranga gets a boon from Lord Brahma such that nothing in this creation can kill him. He gets overwhelmed by the power of the boon and starts animosity with Devatas. Devatas pray Divine Mother for help. The she proclaims that she will take birth again as daughter of the Mountain king. Then a son will be born to her and Lord Shiva. He will kill Taraka. After sometime Divine mother took birth as daughter of the Mountain king. 'Shaila' means mountain. 'Shailendra' means greatest of all mountains. 'Shailendra tanaya' means daughter of the Shailendra. There are 7 popular Mountain ranges. They are:
- Himalayas
- Nishadas
- Vindhyas
- Malyavanta
- Paariyatra
- Gandhamaadhana
- Hema Koota
Himalayas are the greatest of all the mountain ranges.
