భావయామి మహాదేవం దక్షిణామూర్తి విగ్రహం ||
దక్షిణముఖంగా కూర్చుని, త్రిమూర్తులకు గురువుగా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందినవాడు. ఒకసారి బ్రహ్మ విషయంలో అనుమానం వచ్చి సనక సనందనాదులు పరమేశ్వరుణ్ణి ప్రార్ధించారు. అప్పుడు ఆయన పదహారు సంవత్సరాల వయస్సుతో భాండీరము అనే వటవృక్షం క్రింద దక్షిణాభిముఖంగా పద్మాసనంలో, చిన్మయముద్రతో, తురీయ స్థితిలో దర్శనమిచ్చాడు. అతన్ని చూడగానే వారి సంశయాలన్నీ తొలగిపోయాయి. అతడే దక్షిణామూర్తి. సర్వవిద్యలకు నది. సర్వవిద్యా ప్రపంచానికి గురువు. కేవలము సరస్వతీదేవి రూపము.
దక్షిణామూర్తి అనే పేరులో దక్షిణ అంటే - సృష్టి స్థితి లయ కారుకుడైన సగుణ బ్రహ్మ. మూర్తి అంటే - నిర్గుణ బ్రహ్మ. పరమేశ్వరి సగుణ, నిర్గుణ బ్రహ్మ స్వరూపిణి. కాబట్టే ఆమె దక్షిణామూర్తి రూపిణీ అనబడింది.

వర్షిస్తానంటే వాసదృషిగానైహ్ ఆవృత్తం బ్రహ్మనిష్ఠఇహి

వట వృక్షం క్రింద మౌనంగా కూర్చునివున్న శ్రీ దక్షిణామూర్తికి నమస్కారములు. ఆయన యువకుడు. అయినా చుట్టూ వయోవృద్ధులైన మునులు ఋషులు ఉన్నారు. ఆయన చిన్ముద్ర పట్టి ఆత్మానందంలో రమించిపోతున్నారు. ఆ దక్షుణామూర్తియే మనందరికీ గురువు.
వాతవిటపి సమీపే భూమిభాగే నిషణ్ణం
సకల ముని జనానాం జ్ఞాన దాతారామారాత్
త్రిభువన గురుమీశం దక్షిణామూర్తి దేవం
జనన మరణ దుఖఃచ్ఛేద దక్షం నమామి
ఆయన మూడు లోకాలకు గురువు. వటవృక్షం క్రింద కూర్చుని మునులందరికి జ్ఞానం పంచుతున్నారు. వారికి జననమరణాలనే దుఃఖాన్ని తొలగిస్తున్నారు.

ఘనీభవించిన జ్ఞాన స్వరూపం. సాక్షాత్తు మహేశ్వరుడు ఈ మర్రి చెట్టు క్రింద వెలిశాడు. ఈ దక్షిణామూర్తి సచ్చిదానంద స్వరూపుడు. ఆయనకు నా నమస్సుమాంజలులు.

వ్యోమవద్వ్యాప్త దేహాయ దక్షిణామూర్తియేనమః
ఈశ్వరుడు, గురువు, ఆత్మ. ఇవన్నీ పరబ్రహ్మ యొక్క రూపాలు. వీటన్నింటిలోనూ ఆవహించి చిదాకాశంలా ఉన్నాడు దక్షిణామూర్తి. ఆయనకు నమస్కారములు.

Dakshina murthy is sitting in padmasana with head facing south. He is known as the guru of the Trimurthys. Once upon a time, great saints like Sanaka, Sananda etc were not clear about Brahma. They prayed Parameshwara to resolve their doubts. Then Lord Parameshwara came as 16 year old bachelor and sat before them under the Bhandira tree. All their doubts got resolved at the mere sight of Sri Dakshina murthy. He is the essence of all the knowledge and wisdom. The guru of all students. Pure form of Goddess Saraswathi.
Dakshina means creation, sustenance and destruction. Murthy means attribute less para brahma. Divine mother is brahma with and without attributes. So she is called Dakshina Murthy.

It is indeed a strange picture to behold; At the root (i.e. base) of a Banyan Tree (Vata) are seated old Disciples (i.e. aged Disciples) in front of an Young Guru, The Guru is Silent, and Silence is His exposition (of the Highest Knowledge); and that (Silence) is severing the doubts (automatically) from the minds of the Disciples.
