Matruka means letters from 'Aa' to 'Ksha'. 'Kshara' means perishable. 'Akshara' means imperishable. In Indian languages, Letters are as 'Akshar' or 'Akshara'. Each letter denotes the shakti and color of Divine mother. Each letter has a goddess. Each goddess has shakti, color and weapons.

It is said that, if a yogi meditates on these beejas with full concentration, their power spreads in this range.
It is said like this in Yagna Vaibhava khandam:
Yatha parata Shambhuh Dwidha shakthih Shivatmana
Tathaiva matrukaadevi Dwidha bhootam sati swayam
Ekaa kaarena shaktistu vaachikaa chetarenatu
Shivasya vaachikaa saaksha dwdeyam padagaamini
Just like how Paramatma is learnt as Shiva and Shakti, Matrukas are also learnt as vowels and consonants. Vowels are forms of Shakti and consonants are forms of Shiva.
