634: Uma

'Uu' means Shiva. "Ma' means Parvati. Uma means Shiva and Shakti. 

When devatas pray Divine Mother to kill Tarakasura, She says, "A son will be born to the daughter of the Mountain king 'Himavant' and Lord Shiva. He will kill Tarakasura. After sometime, Menaka, wife of Himavant gives birth to a girl child. She grows up thinking about Shiva always. As she reaches adulthood, she determines to marry Lord Shiva. Shiva is in deep meditation at that time. So to reach Shiva, she also decides to goto forest and do tapasya. But her mother Menaka becomes worried about her daughter. She says, 'Uu - My daughter'. 'Ma - Don't go'

Uma means - The one who is great and noble. It is said like this in Sutha Samhita, "I salute to Uma! The one that can help experience the bliss of Atma. The one that can destroy the sins. The one that has a glow greater than Sada Shiva. The one who is great and glorious in many ways.

Pranava has three syllables. 'Aa' represents Vishnu. 'Uu' represents Shiva and 'Mm' represents Brahma. Uma is the pranava of Divine Mother that represents the gods of creation, sustenance and destruction.

In Linga purana, Shiva said this to mother, 'My pranava has syllables 'Aa', 'Uu' and 'Mm'. Your's has 'Uu', 'Mm and 'Aa'.

In Maha Vashishtyam, it is said that Divine mother is called 'Uma' because it represents the essence of 'Aum' or 'Om'

Uma means the radiance of moon that inspires the hearts of everyone.

In Shiva Sutras, Uma is explained is the power of determination.

Uma means glow - 'Ya devi sarvabhooteshu kanthi roopena samsthita'
