Meru Reva nilayo yasya sah
She who has Mount Meru as her abode. Meru represents Sri Chakra. Divine Mother is in the 9th stage of Sri Chakra. Hence she is called Meru nilaya.
Meru is a golden mountain. It surrounds the earth like a ring. Sun and Moon rotate around this. Devatas stay on top of this mountain. It's height is 1 lakh yojanas. This is surrounded by 8 mountains
East - Jathara, Devakootami mountains
West - Pavamaana, Pariyaatra mountains
North - Trisrunga, Makara mountains
South - Kailasa, karaveera mountains
These mountains are abodes of Ashta dhikpalakas.
River Ganga that has flown through Lord Vishnu's feet originated in Meru. From Meru, it streamed to Brahma loka. From there it circled through Dhruva pada, Saptarshi mandala, Chandra mandala and reached Brahma loka again. Then it split into 4 rivers. They are 1. Sita, 2. Alakananda, 3. Chatura, 4. Bhadra.
The Paamir knot
Some researchers stated that Mount Meru is the Paamir Knot. Hindu, Buddhist and Jain scholars described Meru as a sacred mountain having 5 peaks. The Pamir knot looks as if the Hindukush, Himalaya, Karakoram, kunlun and Tian shan mountains emerge from it.
