464. Kaalakanti

క్షీరసాగర మధనం జరిగినప్పుడు కాలకూట విషం బయటపడింది. దాని వేడికి ఊర్ధ్వ లోకాలన్నీ కాలిపోతున్నాయి. అప్పుడు వారిని రక్షించడానికి శివుడు విషాన్ని మ్రింగివేసాడు. కానీ గుటక వేస్తే అది కడుపులోకి వెళ్తుంది. అక్కడ అధోలోకాలు ఉంటాయి. వాటికి ప్రమాదం వస్తుంది. అందుకని విషాన్ని కంఠంలోనే ఉంచుకున్నాడు. కాలకూట విషాన్ని కంఠమునందు ఉంచుకున్నాడు కాబట్టి శివుడికి కాలకంఠుడు పేరు వచ్చింది. అమ్మ ఆయని భార్య కాబట్టి కాలకంఠి అన్నారు.

లింగపురాణంలో దారుకాసురుడనే రాక్షసుని సంహరించటానికి శివుడు కాలకంఠి అనే శక్తిని సృష్టించాడు అని చెప్పబడింది.

మరొక వివరణ - కోకిల వంటి కంఠనాదము గలదిగాన కాలకంఠ అనబడుతోంది.

కాలంజరపురంలో పూజించబడే దేవత పేరు కాలకంఠి

శంకర భగవత్పాదులవారు తమ సౌందర్య లహరిలోని 66వ శ్లోకంలో

విపంచ్యా గాయంతీ వివిధమపదానం పశుపతే
స్వయారట్టే వక్తుం చలిత శిరసా సాధువచనే
తదీయై ర్మాధుర్యై రపలపితతంత్రీకలరవాం
నిజాం వీణాం వాణీ నిచుళయతి చోళేన నిభ్రుతమ్ ||

తల్లీ ! సరస్వతి నీ ఎదురుగా నీ పతి పశుపతి వీరగాధలను గానం చేస్తుంటే నీవు ఆనందించి ఆమెను ప్రశంసించావు. నీ వాక్కులు తన వీణానాదం కన్న మధురంగా ఉన్నాయని తెలిసి సరస్వతీదేవి తన వీణ కనపడకుండా కప్పి వేసింది. పరమేశ్వరి వాక్కు మధురము అని చెబుతున్నారు.

Kaala means poison. Kanta means throat. To protect the world, Lord Siva consumed the poison. But he could not swallow it because if it goes down into his stomach, it will burn all the lokas inside. So, he kept it at his throat. Hence, he is called Kaala kanta. Divine mother is his consort. Hence, she is called Kaala kanti.

In the Lingapurana it is said that Lord Shiva created the power Kalakanti to kill the demon Darukasura. Another interpretation is that she is called Kalakantha because she has cuckoo-like voice. Kalakanthi is the name of the deity worshiped in Kalanjarapuram Shankara Bhagavatpada in verse 66 of his Soundarya Lahari

Vipan̄cyā gāyantī vividhamapadānaṁ paśupatē

svayāraṭṭē vaktuṁ calita śirasā sādhuvacanē

tadīyai rmādhuryai rapalapitatantrīkalaravāṁ

nijāṁ vīṇāṁ vāṇī nicuḷayati cōḷēna nibhrutam ||

O!Mother! When Saraswati was singing the heroic deeds of your spouse Pashupati, you rejoiced the music and appreciated her. Then your words of appreciation are sweeter and more musical than Saraswati's Veena music. Knowing this, Goddess Saraswati hid her veena inside. This poem explains how sweet it would be when Divine mother talks.
