పితృదేవతలకు తర్పణలు అర్పించేటప్పుడు కుడిచేతి బ్రొటనవేలు కిందికి ఉంచి నువ్వులు నీళ్ళు వదులుతూ స్వధాంతర్పయామి,స్వధాంతర్పయామి, స్వధాంతర్పయామి అంటారు. ఆ వదిలిన తర్పణ స్వధాదేవి ద్వారా పితృదేవతలకు చేరుతుంది. దేవీ భాగవతంలో 'పితృదేవతలకు సిద్ధకర్మలలో తర్పణద్వారా ఆహారం లభించేటట్లు చేశాడు బ్రహ్మ. కాని వారికి అది సక్రమంగా అందటం లేదు. పితృదేవతలు వారి బాధలు బ్రహ్మకు చెప్పుకున్నారు. వారి కష్టాలు తీర్చటానికి బ్రహ్మ 'స్వధా అనే కన్యను సృష్టించాడు. ఆమె అపురూప సౌందర్యరాశి. ఈమెను పితృదేవతలకు సమర్పించాడు. శ్రాద్ధకర్మలలో పితృదేవతలకు సమర్పించిన తర్పణలను సవ్యంగా వారికి అందించటమే ఈమె పని.
దేవీవామే స్వధాంతథా - అగ్నిదేవుడికి స్వాహాదేవి కుడి ప్రక్కన ఉంటే స్వధాదేవి ఎడమ ప్రక్కన ఉంటుంది.
Tarpana - During Shraardha, we offer tarpana to Pitru devatas (elders who passed away). Black sesame seeds are dripped down the thumb finger along with water. This serves as food for pitru devatas. This is as per the laws of creation of Prajapati. However, pitru devatas complained that they are not receiving their entitled food. So Brahma created 'Swadha' and assigned her the job of carrying tarpanas to pitru devatas. So we chant the mantra 'Swadham tarpayaami' while offering tarpanas.
